Chair, Graduate School of Engineering

The Kanagawa University’s Graduate School of Engineering has been reorganized to two courses, the course of Engineering and the course of Architecture and Building Engineering, since 2019. The Engineering course consists of seven fields, the Fields of Mechanical Engineering, the Field of Electrical, Electronics, and Information Engineering, the Field of Applied Chemistry, the Field of Industrial Engineering and Management, the Field of Applied Physics, and the Field of Bio and Life Engineering. In order to meet a lot of needs in the industrial world, we aim at educating persons who can play active roles in various fields.
The Kanagawa University’s Faculty of Engineering is also in the course of renewal. The Department of Architecture and Building was upgraded to the Faculty of Architecture and Building in 2022. A new Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry and a new Faculty of Informatics will be established by reorganizing some departments in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science in 2023. A new Department of Applied Physics will be also opened in the Faculty of Engineering in 2023. In this way, Kanagawa University is undergoing major changes through reforms to further enhance education and research. We expect more and more students will have interests in learning, especially discovering the fascination of researches through school lives in Kanagawa University which is remarkably changing now, and such students may have hopes to learn more deeply. The Graduate School of Engineering reorganized previously is ready to live up to such hopes.
By the way, university students may be conscious of going to graduate schools through mainly experiences of studies for graduation theses. In the Graduate School of Engineering, researches through classes of special experiments, “Laboratory”, which are subjects corresponding to studies of graduation theses are main activities. Although some lectures are also given, the research activities become main objects and most important. While reporting your research progress to your teacher and getting advices from them, thinking on your own, and at times discussing some problems with your friends in your laboratory, you will devote your days to your research. It is also important not only studying in the graduate school but attending domestic and international conferences to make presentations and to deepen interactions between researchers. In addition, extramural classes can be taken to have practical experiences in companies and research institutes to improve skills and broaden your horizons. Regarding study abroad, we have revised the system so that students can experience it within the regular term without extending the term of study. Please consider trying overseas study during the graduate school.
During the two years mater course and the three more years doctor course if you go on to higher education, you will spend a fulfilling time concentrating on hard researches. Such time often flies. However, we hope your experiences of efforts and joys to create something new through researches in the graduate school will be your nourishment in your future.

History of the Graduate School of Engineering

The Graduate School of Engineering consists of two majors, Engineering (consisting of seven fields: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Information Systems Creation, Management Engineering, Applied Physics, and Bio and Life Engineering), and Architecture, which were established on six departments of the Faculty of Engineering. In March 1993, Master's and Doctoral programs were established for all departments of the Faculty of Engineering.

April 1967 Master's Course in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Chemistry were established.
April 1971 Master's Course in Architecture was established.
April 1990 Doctoral Courses in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, and Architecture were established.
April 1991 Master's Course in Management Engineering was established.
April 1993 Doctoral Course in Management Engineering was established.
April 2003 Increase in the number of students in the Master's and Doctoral Courses of all departments and change of the name of the Course of Electrical Engineering to the Course of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering
