The master’s program in this field was established in April 1967 as the graduate school majoring in mechanical engineering. Since then, we have continued to enhance the program, and the doctoral program was established in April 1990. To date, the current course/field has produced many talented human resources to the world and has highly evaluated by society. From 2019, the Course of Mechanical Engineering was reorganized into the Field of Mechanical Engineering.

Mechanical engineers are directory and closely involved in the development, design and manufacture of automobiles, aircrafts, railways, robots, medical equipment, industrial machinery, plants and so on. Additionally, mechanical engineers are indispensable in the production of various electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers, and it can be said that mechanical engineering is extremely important in all areas in our life.

The 20th century was a period of rapid industrial development due to advances in science and technology, but many issues remained unresolved, including depletion of the ozone layer, global warming caused by the massive release of CO2, etc. In the 21st century, the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami that occurred on March 11, 2011 brought radiation and power problems, and these problems placed a heavy burden on young people and children who will lead Japan in the future.

From now on, we need to develop technologies to solve many of the problems we are now facing, and it is necessary to pursue sustainable and true richness of life. Mechanical engineers today and in the future are required to have the human power to feel what true richness is and technological development abilities to realize the true richness. In the Field of Mechanical Engineering, we aim to develop such human resources.
